DOCUMENTARIES - LOST IN LA MANCHA, AVAILABLE ON EXTRAS-LOADED DVD AND VHS ON JUNE
24TH.
The DVD - the Ultimate "Insiders" Collectible - is Docurama's Most
Jam Packed Release to Date, Containing Over Three Incredible Hours of Extras,
Including: Deleted Theatrical Scenes, In-Depth Interviews with Gilliam, Depp,
Filmmakers Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe, Storyboards, Production Stills and Costume
Designs From The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, a Conversation Between Gilliam and
Salman Rushdie from the 29th Telluride Film Festival and More!
Ever since Miguel de Cervantes penned Don Quixote in the 17th century, the legendary
tales of the errant knight and his fool accomplice Sancho Panza have haunted
readers' imaginations. One such bedeviled reader was one of cinema's most daring
directors - the supremely gifted Terry Gilliam (Brazil, The Fisher King, 12
Monkeys), who, for over a decade, had sought to adapt the literary classic for
the big screen. But when filming of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote finally began
in September of 2000 in Spain, no one could have envisioned that it would become
known as one of the most ill-fated film projects in cinematic history.
A tantalizing documentary as hilarious as it is tragic, the critically-acclaimed
theatrical hit LOST IN LA MANCHA tracks Gilliam's madcap mission, in what may
well be the first "un-making of" documentary in the history of cinema.
LOST IN LA MANCHA, as captured by filmmakers Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe, presents
the story of a film which, quite simply, does not exist. Docurama proudly
presents an IFC Films Release of one of last year's most talked about and lauded
documentaries. A hit with fans and critics alike, the film even spurred the famously
reticent Woody Allen to compliment, "An extremely entertaining and hilarious
presentation of every film director's worst nightmare." It will be available
on both a special, collectors DVD set loaded with value-added programming ($29.95
SRP) and VHS ($24.95 SRP).
The special 2-disc DVD set of LOST IN LA MANCHA features over three hours of bonus
material, lending another layer of unique, behind-the-scenes texture to this memorable
and highly interactive viewing experience. Included on a separate disc are:
- Exclusive interviews with cast and crew including Terry Gilliam, Johnny Depp,
filmmakers Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe, and producer Lucy Darwin
- Deleted Scenes
- Video Soundbites

Don Quixote

Film Festival

It all started when Terry Gilliam, one of Hollywood's most iconoclastic directors,
set out to "dream the impossible dream." Unfortunately, his wish of
turning his beloved Quixote into a feature film was more akin to a nightmare.
With an all-star cast featuring Johnny Depp (From Hell, Chocolat, Donnie Brasco)
as Sancho Panza and celebrated French actors Jean Rochefort (as the indomitable
knight) and Vanessa Paradis, Gilliam's larger-than-life project seemed destined
for success. And yet, in the blink of an eye, a limited budget and a quagmire
of bad luck -- including the deafening roar of F-16's flying overhead and a
furious hailstorm straight from the bible -- conspired to turn his fanciful
project into a high-profile failure. Capturing this mayhem on camera, Louis
and Pepe were granted unlimited, behind-the-scenes access to Gilliam's frantic
but inspired direction. With Jeff Bridges as narrator, they include surviving
footage from the film and intimate interviews with an infectiously energetic
Gilliam, his cast, and his crew to reveal the inherent fragility of the creative
process. The result is a dramatic and compelling study of how, even with an
abundance of the best will and passion, the artistic endeavor can remain an
impossible dream.
The DVD debuts on the heels of a successful 50 city national theatrical release,
in which LOST IN LA MANCHA played to packed houses, universal acclaim and one
of the highest per screen averages for any documentary last year. Interest in
the film and Quixote-awareness is also at an all time high thanks to a well-received,
high-profile Broadway revival of the original musical, starring Brian Stokes Mitchell
and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Don't miss out on the home entertainment release
of this multiple-award wining film which has been called "One of the best
movies ever made about movies" (Daily Mail, U.K.).
